Java EE is scary to beginners

With so many options, the modern Java EE stack is completly inaccesible to beginning programmers. It is daunting enough to learn your first language and that goes with it and now you have to get your head around all the “Enterprise” stuff as well.

For the first 2 years of your career as you are employed at one of the big companies, you will feel completely inadequate. You will not cope with the platforms that they have. You will deliver so little code that you will have moments where you question the meaning of what you are doing in a very fundamental way. A few people make a healthy choice at this stage and leave to become artists or chefs or something interesting.

The rest of the beginners experience their first burn out either from massive overwork of from sheer boredom.

It will take you another 2 years for you to recover your self confidence.

Its going to be all right

The beginning was a touching moment for both of them. Though neither would later admit, there had been a feeling in the air since they had woken up. The sun had been warm and they could see the sky for the first time in days. The air out side was brutally cold, but from inside, basking for a moment in the sunshine, the allowed themselves to dream of the warmth.

It had been so long since they had experienced the world outside as anything other than frozen city. They could barely remember how it felt to not be wary of open doors or windows.

They day began much as any other. Coffee. Shower. Hungry ? Not really. Maybe the should eat. They did not. There was something exciting in the air. They did not feel like being weighed down with a full stomach. They wanted to get going with their day. Even though they were not saying, they wanted to get going. They were being pulled. They wanted to find out what lay ahead. Almost like something was pulling them forward.

Getting dressed took time as always. So many layers to check and recheck. Habit. Drilled in over years. The horror stories. It was routine now. Protection.

Finally they were ready and cycled themselves to the outside, ready for the walk to the station. Boots crunched the ice. Past the bare solidly frozen trees. Careful not to slip. Step by studied step.

Suddenly they stopped. Both had seen it at the same time. They could not remember when last they had seen this. It must have been when they were children. So very long ago that it was almost a completely new moment. Fresh and alive. There in front of them, in the middle of the ice and snow. There, where they never expected to ever see such a thing, there was water. Not frozen. Not ice. Water.

They knew a change was coming and they new that it was going to be good. Things were going to be all right.
